Ah, unless the Intel drivers can also use a custom EDID instead?  I
may have been jumping to conclusions from reading
http://intellinuxgraphics.org/2009Q4.html ("All user-modesetting code
has now been removed from the driver").

Some experimenting to do, clearly.
