Found the problem with nvidia: the kernel module wasn't actually loading.  
dmesg revealed a kernel version incompatibility.  This seems to be fixed in 
Adam's latest debs in his 'test' subdirectory.  Install those versions, then 
rebuild the nvidia module, and then it loads and X has the correct 
resolution.
