I've seen the very similar thing when I upgraded to Maverick few weeks
back, and I solved it by blacklisting "nouveau" module:

$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/sony-laptop.conf 
blacklist nouveau
options sony-laptop speed_stamina=0

I needed to update-initramfs as well before it'd all work.

FWIW, I am not using Nvidia card at all, so I haven't looked further
than that.
