stuttering problem in speed mode after resume

I have a very annoying problem after resuming from a suspend when in speed mode where the system seems to stutter. That is, every few seconds or so, the system will freeze (mouse won't move, nothing responds) and peg at 100%cpu for a second or 2 before continuing and then repeating the cycle a few seconds later. I only have this problem in speed mode after a resume. The problem exists in all of the kernels I've tried (currently running the 2.6.38 natty release) and with or without power plugged in. I'm running kubuntu 10.10 (fully patched) with an encrypted / built using the alt cd and with up-to-date nvidia binary drivers and the sony kernel module. The system is a z133gx/b with 8G ram. 10.10

There is a thread about a similar problem in windows on the notebookreview.com sony forum with no solutions.
Does anyone have any solutions or suggestions?
The problem is severe enough to have made suspending from speed mode useless for me.

Thanks,
Jon
