I have attached screenshots made with the print screen button, while running with the onboard display. If you compare these two, they are the same. So X is running with the same color-depth as windows (called *_screenshot.png), which was also pointed out in an earlier mail.
Now, if you look at the two other attached files (*_pic.png), they resemble what i actually see. Clearly the gnome picture has artifacts while the windows one does not. Okay maybe it's not that clear, but if you look hard enough you will notice :) (crappy camera)
So the panel supports 24 bit, but somehow linux / X / gnome fails to enable this.
