OK, thats normal but not what you want/need.

I guess that you will have to restart your X-Server after plugin in
the Monitor in the hdmi port.. Did you already try to boot with (on
hdmi-port) pluged in monitor?

I know, I use a Samsung SyncMaster 2693HM as external Monitor myself
which is full hd (1920:1200) as well. The VGA-Port is, as I wrote
above, not what you want or need..

YES

That doesn't make difference at all. It has always worked for me
already with every nvidia-driver I'd have installed in the past.
Actually I use the same as you, 280.13

It worked for me on Ubuntu:
- - jaunty jackalope (9.04)
- - karmic koala (9.10)
- - lucid lynx (10.04)
- - maverick meerkat (10.10)
- - natty narwhal (11.04)
in the past and actualy on
- - oneiric ocelot (11.10)

this may help you to install everything on ubuntu:
http://global-social.net/sony-VGN-Zseries
I have several different xorg.conf files; one for for twinview, one
for 2-X-servers (every Monitor it's own x-Server) and for just one
Monitor (which actually don't need any xorg.conf at all but I still
generate one)
With the acpi keys 's1' and 's2' I switch between those modes, they
detect everything, ask me to close all open windows before it restarts
the x-server and after that, the new config comes up. _Almost_ always
working ;-)
Regards,
