Re: oneiric already worth trying?

Hey Harry,

On my Vaio Z13, I see the following in /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/:

uevent
modalias
subsystem
power/async
power/runtime_status
power/runtime_usage
power/runtime_active_kids
power/runtime_enabled
power/control
power/runtime_suspended_time
runtime_active_time
autosuspend_delay_ms
driver
speed_stamina
odd_power
touchpad
battery_care_limiter
battery_care_health
thermal_profiles
thermal_control
kbd_backlight
kbd_backlight_timeout
als_managed
als_lux
als_defaults
als_backlight_levels
als_backlight
als_power
als_kelvin

So kbd_backlight does need to exist, before you can echo anything to it. Perhaps you didn't install the sony-laptop module correctly? This is what I did:

Download the 0.9np8 source from gitorious, file name: sony-laptop-zseries-sony-laptop-zseries-master.tar.gz.

$ sudo su -
$ cd /usr/src
$ tar zxvf ~/Downloads/sony-laptop-zseries-sony-laptop-zseries-master.tar.gz
$ mv sony-laptop-zseries-sony-laptop-zseries/ sony-laptop-zseries-0.9np8
$ cd sony-laptop-zseries-0.9np8/
$ apt-get install dkms
$ make
$ make test
$ make install
$ modprobe sony-laptop
$ dkms add -m sony-laptop-zseries -v 0.9np8

But in your message I also read that backlit "just works" when it gets dark. Not in my case, so it seems. Did you install sony-acpid or something to make it behave like that?

The fingerprint works perfectly in my Vaio. Commands pulled from my history:
$ lsusb

> Bus 001 Device 003: ID 147e:1001 Upek

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fingerprint/fingerprint-gui
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install libbsapi policykit-1-fingerprint-gui fingerprint-gui

See: https://launchpad.net/~fingerprint/+archive/fingerprint-gui

Best,

Wouter

Yes! I've got Oneiric running pretty happily now!

I've added some details to the wiki at http://linux-on-sony-vaio-z.wikispaces.com/ (last entry)

I had to wait until i'd created some windows recovery disks - just in case.

I managed to fix the grub problem using boot-repair, as per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows, just followed the default options.

I've also managed to install the kernel modules fro Norbert Preining, following the instructions on global-social.net <http://global-social.net>. I would mention that those instructions refer to an old version of the modules (0.9np5 instead of 0.9np8).

A couple of things still don't work:
- keyboard backlight
- battery care / maximum charge limiting

Wouter, you seem to have had some success with these two, can you help?

I've taken a look inside /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/, I see several files:
battery_care_health
battery_care_limiter
driver
fan_control
fan_profiles
fan_speed
modalias
power
speed_stamina
subsystem
thermal_control
thermal_profiles
touchpad
uevent

so that gives me some hope i can at least manage battery_care_limiter - I'll experiment with that, by changing the value in that file.

but you mentioned using kbd_backlight. Does that need to exist? You suggested setting kbd_backlight to 1, but I get:
sudo sh -c 'echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight'
sh: cannot create /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight: Directory nonexistent

Also, what about the fingerprint scanner? how did you get that working?

Thanks in advance if you find time to reply. And, even if you don't, thanks to you, and everyone on the list, for making me believe it was possible - i might still be running windows if it weren't for your encouragement!

cheers all,
Harry

    You can re-enable the keyboard backlight with NP's sony-laptop
    module (0.9np8 here). After installation you can do:

    sudo sh -c 'echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight'

    Hi there,

    Oneric is running quite well for me (VPCZ11). The only thing not

            Did you said i must write in grub
            GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash 195.modeset=0" ?
            or waiting for kernel 3.1 ?

        Yes you can do GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash
        195.modeset=0", but I think you should install kernel 3.1
        available from the kernel ppa mainline.
        Look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds and at
        http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.1-rc10-oneiric/
        <http://kernel.ubuntu.com/%7Ekernel-ppa/mainline/v3.1-rc10-oneiric/>

        Regards,
        Damien R.
