Re: System freeze using sony-laptop-zseries-0.9np8pre3

Oddly I have been further testing and discovered that if I put the switch into the speed position, the system boots fine and doesn't freeze.

Is there anyway to tell what graphics chip I'm using?

Both appear in lspci:

csb@csb-laptop:~$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 330M] (rev a2)

Power usage isn't great:

The battery reports a discharge rate of 26.3 W

The switch is detected correctly:

csb@csb-laptop:/sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop$ cat speed_stamina
speed

Any suggestions?
Craig

Hi Craig,

Vaio Z1 series (Z11, Z12, Z13), right?

I never reinstalled 11.10, but upgraded from fresh 11.04 installation (11.10 wasn't released yet).

After installation of 11.04, I also installed 0.9np8 (newer than pre3 perhaps?) using DKMS.

I have never experienced your problem, though.

I use a hacked bios set to Static switching and I always set it to Stamina. My system only sees the Intel graphics card.

Do you run the kernel with any non default boot parameters?

What happens if you run the module after booting?

Kind regards,

Wouter

Hello,

I recently formatted my laptop and reinstalled Ubuntu 11.10, I
downloaded the source for sony-laptop-zseries-0.9np8pre3 and added it to
DKMS and installed the module.

Whenever I boot my system with the module, typing or moving the mouse
causes a system freeze that requires a hard reboot. The minute I remove
the module, I can boot and run the OS stable again.

There doesn't seem to be anything strange in the logs that might imply
what's going wrong, I would really like to get this working as the
module adds a lot of battery life and functionality to the install.
