Oddly I have been further testing and discovered that if I put the 
switch into the speed position, the system boots fine and doesn't freeze.

Is there anyway to tell what graphics chip I'm using?

Both appear in lspci:


csb@csb-laptop:~$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT

Power usage isn't great:

The battery reports a discharge rate of 26.3 W

The switch is detected correctly:

csb@csb-laptop:/sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop$ cat speed_stamina
speed



Any suggestions?
