RAID0 versus LVM and TRIM
Guys,
I've been enjoying playing with my new Z3 the last couple of weeks. I've
tried two different setups as follows:
a. Just Ubuntu with fakeraid disabled and using mdadm with raid 0 to
combine the two 128GB SSDs together
b. Again fakeraid disabled but Dual booting a small partition of windows 8
on the first SSD and then having Ubuntu use LVM to create a logical volume
to span the remaining space on the first ssd and all of the second to
create a single logical volume for Ubuntu.
I'm current still in setup B and thinking of dropping Windows completely,
while this means I'll lose most of my gaming capability I really should
concentrate on work instead :)
Anyway, one concern with mdadm in RAID0 is that it doesn't support TRIM. Do
anyone know if this is still a concern or does the SSD in the Sony garbage
collect on its own? I googled quite a bit on the topic but info was either
contradictory or too old to be trusted. Using LVM to span the drives is one
possibility and it does support TRIM but mdadm is easier to deal with from
an Ubuntu install perspective and probably faster then LVM striping.
Do most people here use RAID0 with mdadm, the fakeraid or LVM and how has
your experiences been to date?
Gerald
