Also install libsphinxbase-dev, and libpocketsphinx-dev.
To compile the test.c file given here
http://cmusphinx.sourceforge.net/wiki/tuturialpocketsphinx use following
command
gcc -o hello_ps test.c -DMODELDIR=\"`p
kg-config --variable=modeldir pocketsphinx`\" `pkg-config --libs --cflags
pocketsphinx`

This way you can test if everything is installed fine.
