compiz is functional, though there are numerous display artifacts.  We recommend to switch to metacity ("Ubuntu 2D" session) and to disable HW cursor, as described in the "Ubuntu Precise 12.04 - TI OMAP Release PPA Update December 2012" thread (https://groups.google.com/d/topic/pandaboard/vKunvhMNV8k/discussion).
The problems described here are known issues, and workarounds are documented on pandaboard group.

Title:
   ubuntu-omap4-extras:  Error! Bad return status for module build on
  kernel: 3.2.0-35-omap (armv7l)

Status in OMAP4 Ubuntu Multimedia addons:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  I tried to install ubuntu-omap4-extras in system ubuntu12.04(desktop)
  on borad omap4430.according to

  #sudo apt-get install ubuntu-omap4-extras

  and then some new packages will be installed, including:
  linux-headers-3.2.0-35      linux-headers-3.2.0-35-omap       linux-headers-3.4.0-1489     linux-headers-3.4.0-1489-omap4
  linux-headers-ti-omap4    linux-image-3.4.0-1489-omap4   linux-image-ti-omap4            linux-ti-omap4 pvr-omap4

  at the end of the installation, I got an error :
