What exactly does uname -a produce?
I have tried this before and gotten the 686 kernel.
Maybe I caused an issue when I tried to fix the indicator

I wonder what is causing this...

yes I use
KERNEL=(linux-base linux-image-686-pae linux-headers-686-pae)
though the headers are probably not needed.... I think it is good to
include them if the user needs a special graphics driver later.... which
is more likely on a newer computer.
