Testing Debian ISO
Hey everyone!
I tested the ISO (finally) on real hardware.
So far I am extremely impressed. The Debian version is actually more
responsive on the 'dumpster' computer. I also verified that installing
the 'restricted extras' item from firstrun works perfectly.
I was able to rip/listen to CDs, watch html5 drm video on Amazon, and
watch a DVD. To be honest I only watched the menu screen on the DVD,
but I will test it with a full movie at some point soon.
I also noticed something wonderful. Debian has dunst! For those of you
who do not know, dunst is a notification display program. It is
extremely light and fast! So I am going to upload my dunst
configuration in the ToriOS /etc/skel that way our users will have a
more complete dunst out of the box. I have been using dunst on my
computer for a few months now and I like it. It is similar to the xfce
notification program, though it also can show a list of the previous
notifications.
It is also extremely small and lightweight. It provides all the
functionality we require, and I have spent enough time with it to create
a nice enough configuration that most users will be satisfied out of the
box. The default is rather clunky, with odd colors, and would go
directly over the Apps button. So whether or not we decide to add it,
we can possibly add a menu item in firstrun to give the users a good choice.
I am going to rework the firstrun program to use the dialog chooser
program. For those who missed the last e-mail, dialog-chooser is a
script I wrote to do all the work to pick the right dialog program(s)
for our scripts. It will also create dialog/whiptail dialogs if X is
not running (i.e. [[ -z "$DISPLAY" ]] )
I am quite excited about it, as we will not have to update our programs
to use yad, if Debian includes it at any point in stable. We can simply
advise users to install it. we could potentially run a dialog after an
update to advise users of information, as we can control the ability to
modify their .jwmrc from a post install script and so the next time they
log in a dialog will pop up (and then remove itself from the autostart)
OR we can simply add an item into the nice-start program we use to
autostart things in the xdg_autostart directory
