@gunnarhj I tried this. I'm getting the following output:

"cat: /root/.xsession-errors: No such file or directory"

"sudo cat /var/log/lightdm/lightdm/lightdm.log" executed but problem
persists

  Returned to the greeter screen when logging in.

Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  If I log in as Guest or root, I can get into the account.  However, if
  I use my normal user account, I just get returned to the login screen.
  If I use gdm as my desktop manager, I can get to my user account.
