[Bug 1363034] [NEW] Xorg freeze
Public bug reported:
As you will be able to tell from the log files, I am testing out Utopic
on an iMac. Prior to experiencing these problems I had been using 14.04
with no display problems whatsoever.
If I use the nouveau driver then I get regular 100% CPU spikes in
/usr/bin/X. If I install the recommended nvidia driver (nvidia-331) and
reboot then lightdm appears for a few seconds and then I get a blank
screen (or I manage to log in quickly but then it locks up once we're in
Unity, Gnome, KDE, LXDE or Cinnamon - tried them all!). Once it's
reached this state, if I SSH to the machine and run htop then it
indicates 100% kernel CPU usage (i.e. the htop CPU usage bar is coloured
entirely red); although no individual process is listed as using more
than 0.5% CPU or 2.5% RAM). Load average is 6.0-8.0.
I have created a new user account in case it was a setting in a config
file somewhere in my home directory, but I get the same result with the
test account.
