Title:
no sound or audio after successful upgrade to 10.4 LTS

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
I successfully upgraded to 10.4 LTS from Karmic Koala. If I type the
command "alsamixer" into a terminal I am informed 'no such file"
exists, and if I try other commands to list hardware I am told 'no
soundcards found'. This is an AMD desktop which I successfully have
been using Ubuntu on as the only OS since 2007. I believe it has a
soundprocessor as part of the motherboard, not a stand-alone
soundcard. I have been unsuccesful in trying to figure out if it is a
driver problem, etc. I have an older machine, a Vaio desktop which is
running the identical OS version with no problem and no change to the
sound or audio. Both were successfully upgraded within a day or two of
  each other. Thanks.
