[Bug 1434907] [NEW] improve feedback at failing start

Invoking `pulseaudio -D` caused the output `E: [pulseaudio] main.c:
Daemon startup failed.`. This is unhelpful in every imaginable case and
should be enhanced by providing the reason why the start failed in the
output.
