Title:
Default search engines list can’t be customized per locale/country
Status in webbrowser-app package in Ubuntu:
Triaged
Bug description:
This is an enhancement request rather than a real bug.
Since version 0.23+15.04.20150515-0ubuntu1, webbrowser-app comes with
a default list of search engines that are installed system-wide, and
that can be supplemented/overridden by locally installed OpenSearch
description files.
This list is global, thus for a search engine to be part of it it has to adapt its search results to the user’s locale.
It might be desirable to have per-country/per-locale lists of search engines, rather than just a global one. There could be a fallback list for locales which don’t specify a custom list.
See e.g. what chromium does:
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/codesearch#chromium/src/components/search_engines/template_url_prepopulate_data.cc
