[Bug 1393603] Re: No acceptable non compositing desktop anymore

With proper GPU support, compositing desktops should be much faster and smoother than the previous iteration.
Anyway, if what you want is a Gnome2 like interface - https://ubuntu-mate.org/ might be what you want.

I'm also hopeful that Unity8 will be faster than Unity is currently due
to it's need to run on lower powered hardware.

I'm going to go ahead and close it, because it isn't a bug to be fixed,
more a project direction request.

Title:
No acceptable non compositing desktop anymore

Status in ubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
Since 12.04 (I guess) there is no usable full fledged desktop without
  compositing anymore.

Despite providing several benefits, compositing desktops introduce
some small lag to almost any display operation, that some people
(including me) find annoying. This is an effect currently experienced
on any compositing system (including Windows and Mac OS), which gives
a kind of slight honey feel to every mouse or keyboard input.

However, with gnome-fallback gone (or replaced by classic mode
building on top of gnome-shell) there is no full featured gnome like
  environment without compositing anymore.

lxde and xfce can be used of course, but the are not in the best shape
for Ubuntu, for example showing several small caveats at desktop
configuration, eg. multi monitor setups and such.

Ubuntu should provide a featured and lag free experience for those who
  do power work with.
