Talks on Ubuntu delivered to UK further education college

I am delighted to report that I have delivered a total of six talks over two days to students of a UK further education college (17 to 20 year olds approximately). The attenders were all on courses which had computing as a part of their courses. Approximately 100 attenders in all.

The subject was Ubuntu for students.

The content included GNU and Free Software and Linux brief history and ethic, licensing basics, Ubuntu history, demo of toolkit use of Live CD, dual boot, installing, manual partitioning, running from an installed HD, Basic menus and use, Ubuntu Software Centre, social networks facility, Ubuntu One, compiz (spinning cube) and other effects, Wine, Crossover, Virtual box OSE, and access to Windows 7 files from an ubuntu session and of course, games.

The talks were part of a curriculum slot for knowledge diversity.

Attenders received an Ubuntu desktop CD 10.04.1, Leaflets on Open Source, Ubuntu, Live CD use, and Installing, Multimedia and Ubuntu, and the OpenDisc and OpenEducation disc.

Talks had Q&A, and were more than one hour. They were well received.

It was heartening to find that there was definite (if a bit sparse) independent use of Ubuntu, usually alongside Windows.
