[Bug 596856] [NEW] cannot access HD from installation CD

Public bug reported:

Hi Guys,

I could not agree more with Bejamin's latest blog posting. There is
still a lot of work to be done on ubuntu before it will become
mainstream.

I think you should include something about SATA II drives and bios
settings in the manual. Most pcs have the IDE protocol in the bios
enabled by default which works fine with SATAI drives and linux. I ran
both ubuntu 7.10 and mint 8.0 on a win xp dual bootable system. However,
I recently had to replace my drive with a SATA II drive (Seagate
ST350041 BAS) and neither ubuntu nor mint could see the drive unless I
enabled the AHCI controller settings in the bios. Then of course I could
not see my WIN XP partition as the AHCI drivers were loaded. Unfortunate
this can only be loaded during the installation of the OS, so had to
enable ACHI and reload windows before I could access both partitions.
There are several postings on the installation & upgrade forum about
guys not being able to see their hard drives. I believe the problem may
be related to kernel 2.6.19.

A second point, the in-line sound is disabled by default in both ubuntu
and linux. This can be only be fixed via the teminal. There are several
postings regarding this setting.

Hope these suggestions will be helpful.

Regards
