Message #00009
quick and dirty analysis of metacity with compositing
Spent a few minutes with Michael discussing pros and cons of using
metacity with compositing. There is an experimental branch that mvo will
investigate.
In general, switching to metacity with compositing will be a regression
in terms of effects and slickness, and will be risky in terms of it's
relative lack of testing on different drivers.
= Using Metacity Compositing =
== Feasibility ==
=== Effects ==
==== Has ====
* Drop shadow
* Nicer alt-tab switcher
==== Lacks ====
* Blur
* Fade in fade out
* Window genie effect
* no animated workspace swithcer
* No zoom (accessability)
=== Risks ===
* Users balk at regression in desktop slickness
* Metacity compositing is less tested, may expose xrender driver issues
=== Benefits ===
* boot up perf bonus to be measured
* indirect direct rendering bugs go away
= Speeding Up Compiz =
== Benefits ==
* maintain current level of ux
== Risks ==
* perf bonus is unknown
* effort is unknown, and resources are not available for it
