I don't have an answer,
but I do know that the driver we're using is pretty messy. Unfortunately it's the only driver available that makes wifi work at all.
The reason wifi doesn't work out of the box with regular Ubuntu is actually that the driver code is too messy. Madwifi (the organization making the driver madwifi) is working on cleaning up the code. They've worked on it for over half a year now...
