This isn't much of an answer, but it sounds to me like your problem
isn't necessarily with Ubuntu. You might have a flaky network
connection, or the wrong WEP key, or have a dodgy router (that needs
restarting?).

Going elsewhere might actually be a good idea: see if you can connect to
other networks or if the problem is confined to your home one.
