I would like to know how to control the display brightness via software. I was able to peform commands li,e this on eeeXubuntu 7.10:

echo -n $VALUE > /proc/acpi/asus/brn

But on Ubuntu Eee that path is read-only (even though it has 644 permission).

How can I achieve the desired effect?
