rogeramitchell confirmed that the question is solved:
it's now working, but let me describe what i did just to make sure
everyone knows what i did.

i had used unetbootin that was suggested by ubuntu-eee's website for
installation. after installing ubuntu with this, it did not work. i then
decided to reinstall it using the generic unetbootin program and the
latest iso. this magically made everything start working again. i have
no idea what happened, but perhaps it was just a crappy install. i'd
suggest using the unetbootin program that you find when you search
google for their page instead of the one that ubuntu-eee used.
