More info, FWIW:

device.map on the Eee PC reads:
(hd0) /dev/sda

device.map on the USB stick reads:
(hd0)	/dev/sda
(hd1)	/dev/sdb
(hd2)	/dev/sdc

I'm profoundly baffled, because it appears that none of the files in the
/boot or /boot/grub directories have been modified or created today. So
I can't figure out what putting Ubuntu on the USB stick can have done to
the system drive.
