[Question #48540]: No Alsamixer icon

New question #48540 on Ubuntu Eee:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu-eee/+question/48540

Hi there,
I've been having an issue where I can't get an app to play sound if I've already used another app that requires sound e.g. switching from lastfm player to kaffeine for example.
I couldn't find a fix for the glitch exactly, but discovered a workaround whereby I could restart alsamixer using sudo alsamixer force-reload. That did the trick, but now the volume control icon no longer appears in the top right corner, even after restarting. I know I can get to it by sudo gnome-volume-control in the terminal, but it's a lot handier to have it there as a default icon at startup. Can anyone tell me how to restore it?
I'm running 8,0,1,4 on a 901.

Cheers,

J
