Rob Connolly proposed the following answer:
You probably need to turn it on in the bios. All I did was go into the
bios (F2 at startup), then go into 'Integrated Periperals' and you
should see it (I did this on a 901, but the 1000 should be the same).

You'll still need to install the bluez-gnome package to get it working
with gnome.
