Christopher proposed the following answer:
Ubuntu eee is disassociated, at least regarding distribution releases, from "mint" ubuntu, and we don't stick to the same release schedules. Upgrading from eee 8.04.1 to 8.10 will land you with vanilla ubuntu and some breakage is to be expected.
A walkthrough for updating to "ubuntu eee 8.10",when it is released, using regular repositories and file hacking may or may not be available at that time.
