I can't help you with the first question, but you probably don't want to skip swap completely. Almost no matter how much RAM you have, Linux tends to use all free memory for buffering. Meanwhile rarely used, dirty pages are put into swap. That's why you might get better performance with swap, even though you have 2GB RAM.
