[Question #51017]: No keyboard entry in Firefox

I have installed Ubuntu 8.04.1 on an eee 901. The system ran Win XP before. It is using a German language keyboard layout. When running applications, Open Office 2.4 runs just fine. In Firefox, two problems occur: even though input fields can be selected, no text can be typed in. The only key that works in an input field is "Del". Writing text in Open Office, and then cutting and pasting it, works.
Also, in Firefox the left keypad click doesn't work (the right hand keypad click is fine, though).

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? It looks almost as if Java (OpenOffice) interfaces to the keyboard differently than Firefox...
