Did you ever run your 901 with Xandros (the crappy linux distro as it
came from Asus)?  Did you notice the distortion then?  As doesn't get
quieter when you turn down the volume and your music does, I might be
tempted to suggest that it's a hardware problem.  If it was the same
under Xandros, then it probably is faulty hardware.  If was fine under
Xandros then there's something wrong with your Ubuntu setup.

What version of Ubuntu Eee are you running?
