GJT gave more information on the question:
I tried to upgrade the bios- got a message that the 900AH-ASUS-0405.rom was either too old or incompatible with my hardware.
Any thoughts on this?   This BIOS seems quite erratic to me, and I would like to replace it

As I exited this, it booted from the CD-ROM- no clue why

I  ran the eeeUBuntu OS Live, which I can probably jiggle into working
again.

I was able somewhat erratically to get into the BIOS

I tried to run the standard Ubuntu 8.04 live CD the same way, and it
will not go passed the menu.

Anyone have a clue why?
