Hi McGeehee,
The Netbook Remix launcher interface is the "main menu" that you are talking about. I don't know how you'd make it possible to turn it on and off, but I've found a thread from a while back where people discussed turning it off.
The first post mentions disabling maximus and UME Desktop Launcher in Accessories -> Sessions.
- Maximus makes all the windows appear maximised under Gnome whenever you launch a new window
- UME Desktop Launcher I think is the Ubuntu Mobile Internet Device Edition interface that the Netbook Remix launcher interface is built on
