Ive tried to disable the recent documents list in the places menu using ubuntu methods, however none ive tried have worked. how can i do this in eeeubuntu on the eee pc 900a?

note the methods ive attempted are  

chmod 400 ~/.recently-used.xbel

and 

rm ~/.recently-used.xbel
touch ~/.recently-used.xbel
chmod 400 ~/.recently-used.xbel
