Re: Lets start rocking - idea of spawning ubuntu gaming distro?

I think there's an advantage to having a common installer. It's easier
to support people if they're all coming from a similar setup; a custom
Remix offers a temptation do to something crazy like remove pulseaudio
or ship nvidia drivers on the DVD.

Don't interpret the above as me being against the idea of making
Ubuntu more suitable for gamers. I think there are some things that
can be done within Ubuntu itself without compromising, and some ways
to accomplish the rest that unite rather than divide. To do otherwise
ends up a division of products that do more harm than good. Look at
Vista for an much derided example of niche overspecialization.

I really do think some of the important stuff can be done in Ubuntu
proper. For example, Wine could be added to the default install of
Ubuntu, or it could be set up to install as needed, similar to audio
codecs. If Wine is a goal for Gaming Team members, Wine has been given
a full focus event ("plenary") at Karmic UDS this coming Monday. It's
tagged video taped, for those unable to attend. I think gaming is a
central use case to Wine and this point may be better solved
universally than only for gamers.

As far as look and feel customization, gamers are already avid
customizers; anything you throw at them by default will probably be
changed. Given a DVD full of games, they won't choose to install them
all. They'll probably change the wallpaper you set, and the
gnome-panel layout you offer. They'll delete extraneous Firefox
bookmarks and RSS feeds. What we can do is design, publish and
announce a wallpaper / theme and host it on something like
gnome-looks.org. It has the potential to reach a wider audience, and
points people who customize their desktops to a site hosting lots of
desktop customizations.

So basically, these are great ideas that need a great home (Ubuntu
itself), and great people driving it (Ubuntu Gaming Team!)
