I've had a couple of freezes in 13.10. Screen would stop being updated
(no ticking clock), but mouse cursor would move and change shape as I
moved it around. I could interact with applications (e.g. type text
into IRC), but not see what I was doing.
I finally tracked it down: a deadlock in gnome-shell, upstream bug
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=676759. It should be fixed
for 14.04 (new glib), but AFAIU isn't fixed for 13.10.
I've also had issues with screen freezes before, when I enabled the
System Monitor extension for gnome-shell and used sshfs. That extension
does blocking statvfs syscalls in the main thread, which causes hangs
with mounted network filesystems when your network goes away.
