The part about tty7 not unfreezing when you kill gnome-shell makes me
suspect the video driver. A GPU hang, perhaps? Unfortunately I've
little clue how to diagnose those.
Do you see anything interesting in dmesg? In /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Does gnome-shell actually die when you kill it? It's possible
gnome-session -- or upstart nowadays -- restarts a new instance of
gnome-shell when it sees the old one died, so check if the PID changes
or if the process goes away entirely.
