[Ubuntugnome-qa] Download page (or release notes) and 14.04.2 HWE
I've just been thinking ...............
A lot of Ubuntu Precise users were incredibly dismayed to find out that
if they installed Precise with 12.04.2, 12.04.3, or 12.04.4 images they
ended up in HWE EOL sooner than if they'd installed using the archived
12.04.1 images. There was no mention of HWE or HWE EOL on the Ubuntu
downloads page at that time.
Now lets forget about Ubuntu and Precise and move onto Ubuntu GNOME and
14.04.2. The general Ubuntu documentation regarding LTS HWE should suffice:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack#Kernel.2BAC8-Support.A14.04.x_Ubuntu_Kernel_Support
Take note that Ubuntu GNOME Trusty installed with either the 14.04 or
14.04.1 images will be supported throughout April 2017, and do NOT
require an HWE upgrade, whereas Ubuntu GNOME Trusty installed with
either the 14.04.2, 14.04.3 or 14.04.4 images will only be supported
until August 2016 at which point they'd require an HWE upgrade to the
16.04 kernel and Xstack.
Confused yet? No page exists for Trusty HWE EOL yet but the procedure
will likely be similar to that for Precise:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/1204_HWE_EOL
So I'm slightly tempted to say our download page should make a brief
mention of that - something to the effect of:
Users not requiring the latest hardware support may wish to use the
archived 14.04.1 installation media in order to avoid HWE EOL in August
2016. (with embedded links to HWE info and the archived images)
BUT (caps because it's a huge but) both 14.04 and 14.04.1 had a horrific
installer bug that resulted in dual/multi-booters losing their Windows
installations and data:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1265192
Thankfully that is fixed in 14.04.2.
So my personal thoughts = I think I'd rather deal with people being
slightly upset over reaching HWE EOL 8 months earlier than Ubuntu GNOME
Trusty itself reaches EOL than recommend anyone use the soon to be
archived 14.04.1 media because of that nasty installer bug.
What does everyone else think?
