I suspect in this case, gnome-shell is starting but failing, in which case to get logs
`journalctl -b /usr/bin/gnome-session` (systemd init)
or
~/.cache/upstart/gnome-session-GNOME.log (upstart)

Probably best to file against gnome-shell and then tag with "wayland-session"
