Re: Time for a name change?
Let's all remember to take a breath from time to time ............ and also remember that the devs are just as human as we all are ;^)
I only brought this up because every thread I open at the forums ends up with someone using the acronym UGR. most recently:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12367719&postcount=3
I like the interim idea of "ubuntu-gnome-edition", aka; UGE but I do think we deserve the "official" name Gubuntu. Remember I already pointed out that Lubuntu began using the name long before it got "official flavor" status :^)

Every month a discussion about the name restart again. I think that if we don't use "Gubuntu" this will never stops.
Jeremmy: Is really so bad to just use Gubuntu ?

To be honest, I've never heard the name until the first message. Thanks for sharing the article, sad I didn't get to it before. I think the writer was merely using it as a play on words rather than referring to an actual project using the name.
I am certain such a name would definitely need approval through the formal channels. I personally believe it would be a realistic appeal granted the public interest in both ubuntu and gnome 3. Could be a valuable addition to the ubuntu brand if it is accepted as an official flavour.
Maybe I'm just being hopeful :)

Is this the Gubuntu referred to earlier:

If so who gave them the legal right to use the name?
I think a lot of people confuse FOSS with the idea of there being no "trademark" protection if you're using FOSS as a dev base. That's not entirely true.
As an example we once had Ubuntu-Lite but Canonical/SABDFL told them to cease and desist so they did.
If we can convince SABDFL that we need to exist it'll be done in short order ............. he's kind of like that ;^)
But I sort of wore out my welcome :^(

Hey Lance, and all the others,
Just wanted to add my two cents. I also find the current naming to be a bit confusing with past endeavours. (does Gnomebuntu ring a bell too?)
I agree an original name could be good for defining the flavour. (from a marketing view)
To be honest, I really like Gubuntu. It's simple and relates to other (active) flavours, Lubuntu, Kubuntu.
I really love this project and I enjoy promoting it. I don't do much work so maybe this is a sneaky opportunity to also say thank you to all those involved. Your work is really appreciated.

Maybe I should say it's past time for a name change ;^)
Using "ubuntu GNOME remix" has resulted in the unfortunate use of UGR as an acronym which could be problematic due to this failed project:
http://ugr.teampr0xy.net/
I know becoming an official "flavor" of Ubuntu can be a long drawn out process but I remember using Lubuntu as far back as Lucid even though it didn't become an official flavor until Oneiric:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/ReleaseNotes/LucidLynx
Why can't we do "Gubuntu"?
Has anyone even asked?
If we can't do that yet why can't we change to using using "ubuntu GNOME desktop" so the new acronym would be UGD?
I really love this project because it will give us the opportunity to more closely interact with the Gnome devs and I'd hope our input can help shape the successful future of Gnome in
general.
