The cause of the FTBFS on Natty is that the file

  /usr/lib/expat.a

has apparently been relocated to

  /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libexpat.a

in Natty.  This is installed by the package libexpat1-dev .

I do not yet know whether that change is deliberate, or whether it is a
bug which will be corrected before Natty is released.  I suspect the
latter, so I don't want to spend time on updating the package to look
for it it the new location at this stage.
