Hi Matti,
just like Lorant I can confirm this bug using 64 bit Hardy and 64 bit Firefox 3 (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.9.0.1) Gecko/2008072820 Firefox/3.0.1) in conjunction with

   $ update-java-alternatives -l
   java-6-openjdk 1061 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk
   $ java -version
   java version "1.6.0_0"
   OpenJDK  Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_0-b11)
   OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 1.6.0_0-b11, mixed mode)

and icedtea-gcjwebplugin (1.0-0ubuntu5).

There's a grey box only, and in the status bar: "starting applet...".
(NB: It does not make a difference whether i have the nvidia driver (from restricted modules) activated or not. Visual effects are disabled.)

Starting Firefox from console reveals "initializing JNLPRuntime..." as the last line. Then, nothing more happens.
If you need more information, please let me know.
