The two merge proposals I filed today may improve things a bit
(particularly the new index), but it's unclear quite how much.

I'm not sure why you encountered that load balancer failure.  That is a
kind of timeout, but a fairly unusual one.  Worth retrying.

The timeouts you got commenting on this bug are unrelated to this bug,
and I'd ask that you not discuss them further here in order to avoid
further muddying the waters.  They're
