State of the design process, 3/3

= How to continue =

The title page should be in line with the internal design. There has
been no decision on layout and fonts, yet. As Kevin does the work with
Latex and appears to be very educated about typography, he should be
left in charge there. I created layout proposals, but told him to take
them as such: just proposals.

We will also need a list of icons to be used inside the document.

So we will have to wait for the internal layout and font selection until
the title page can be finalized.

I propose that we continue the title page design with a text-only stage.
Just black text on white ground. Only the title "Getting Started with
Ubuntu 10.04". With optional Circle-of-Friends (Ubuntu logo). This way
we can focus on the choice of font and the layout of the title. The
exact placement on the page and the margins are not that important at
this stage. This also works around the disagreements.

As a preparation, it would be good to have a list of free fonts with
extended latin character sets, as the choice should be suitable for a
bit more than just English.

How should we handle translations of the title string?

In addition to the just text stage, we could also create color palettes.
just rectangles of colors that work in harmony and that should match our
desired tone. This can be tricky, as the impact of colors depends on
their context, how they are paired, foreground vs background, relative
size of the area covered. But at least trying to tackle this on such an
abstract level might yield interesting results we wouldn't get to see
otherwise.
