My intuition would be "from the slider", and the default position of the
slider (i. e. if gconf doesn't have a custom value) should be the
transparency of the theme. This would follow the usual schema of "user
gconf trumps system/theme defaults".

However, if this is too fragile, I'm not totally avert to an "Use colors
from system theme" like checkbox for the background settings, I just
wanted to explore all options.
