My hope, too, is that there is a resolution on this addition to Dash
before 12.10 is officially released.
There are a couple of different paths we can pursue.
If the lens is an opt-in lens, then I don't think it needs to be
mentioned at all. Having it as "opt-in" is sort of like installing a
new lens, and we do not go into a discussion of all the available
lenses and their capabilities.
If the lens is an opt-out lens, then I believe we should mention it
directly in Chapter 2 because a) it will be enabled by default, and b)
it is such a debated addition to this current release. The problem I
have is that search results can yield rather inappropriate content for
some users. My first experiences with the shopping lens results
produced cover art on CDs that were completely inappropriate for me
and my family to view. So a warning block in Chapter 2 to parents of
younger Ubuntu users is completely appropriate, in my opinion.
If the lens has no opt-in or opt-out capability, then it is just
that...a lens, and one that should be mentioned with all the other
lenses as an attribute of the Dash.
The problem with these paths is that we cannot pursue the best one
until the final release of 12.10 at the very latest.
I was really shocked that they included this lens (and, as the above
states, shocked at the results). I originally had a block quote
statement in chapter 2 mentioning the fact that this lens was
installed by default and that it was a new area for Ubuntu that may or
may not stick going forward because of the privacy issues and
philosophical contradictions, but then someone from the Ubuntu Doc
project suggested I keep opinions out of our manual, and I deferred to
their experiences (I actually could argue opinions are rampant in the
UMP, but that's another email for another time). In the interest of
keeping the UMP objective, I deleted the block and simply included the
"shopping" lens in the list of lenses iterated in the description of
the Dash.
We'll need to monitor this closely.

Well, there is a heated debate on this, and rightly so. When I
noticed this feature in Quantal my first reaction was: have they
gone crazy?
I know we, the manual project, should not give an opinion, but
this really makes me angry. I do hope they will decide to make
this feature an opt-in, not an opt-out.
