My Review of Ubuntu Phone / Touch So Far

Hi Ubuntu Touch people on the mailing list,

One thing I haven't really noticed is someone providing a generic feedback
of the system so far, I thought I would do that via the mailing list (Sorry
if this is not the right place, I won't do it again ;-) )

First off My name is Ryan Walmsley and I am a 16 year old student studying
IT in College (UK). I started using Ubuntu and Linux since about 10/11 and
continue to use it today. The device I have used to test it on is my Nexus
4.

Being who I am I like to test technology and show it off so I wanted to be
able to test out Ubuntu Touch (I got the Nexus 4 about 3 Weeks before with
Ubuntu Touch being one of the reasons why I got the Nexus). First off I was
stupid and didn't realize that It had no Mobile internet data (Oh how I
miss it sometimes), But I stayed on and decided to try and keep it for one
week, one of the first things I noticed was that the Facebook, GMail and
twitter applications were the websites and they worked reasonably well out
of the box (Only thing was that they kept detecting it as an iPhone/iOS
Device). I installed SSH and was having fun doing stuff via terminal,
shortly I had two youtube videos downloaded onto the device and could watch
them completely fine. I shortly hit into my first block of all of the
predone contacts but then found out how to remove them.

During the week the main things I found were the lack of 3G data (Or even
slower) is painful. I know its not meant to be for production use yet but I
think that this feature is REALLY needed. I also noticed that altough the
battery usage has been slightly better due to no 3G the fact that there is
no auto sleep programmed in yet drained the battery down due to the fact
that I was used to the auto sleep & lock.

Apart from running quite slow sometimes I found that it is a very nice and
simple to use but until it gets mobile data added I'm going to switch back
to android.

So far it works really great as a system, but I do have a bit of an
addiction to the internet while I take a boring bus to college.
