[Design] Why the left?

Hi all,
Simple question - why the app bar on the left? It's the hardest part of the phone to reach when holding with the right hand. Also since you can go "back" by swiping at any vertical height on the screen, but selection of apps requires a wide range of specific heights to be touchable, surely it makes more sense to have it on the right, where the whole screen is easily reachable on all phones. It also means going backwards requires swiping towards the left which is usual for going back. So just wondering what the reasoning is behind putting the bar on the left? I'm really curious - I'm sure there must be reasons I've missed.
